Batpism FAQ...
What is baptism?
Baptism is an outward expression of an inward change. It’s a public declaration of how Jesus changed your life. Being baptized shows others that you’ve decided to follow Jesus, and allows them to celebrate this decision with you (Acts 16:31-34).
Baptism doesn’t save a person; it’s a symbol and celebration of your salvation moment that has already happened (1 Peter 3:21). The power that brought Jesus back to life is the same power Jesus uses to change our lives – and that’s worth getting excited about!

Why should I get baptized?
Easy, Jesus tells us to and He set the example by being baptized (Matthew 28:19-20,Mark 1:9).
Obedience to Jesus shows we believe and follow Him. (1 John 2:3). Because Jesus went public about His love for us, we can go public about our love for Him. Being baptized shows that we turn away from a life of sin toward Jesus, the only one who can change us (Acts 2:38-41).

When should I get baptized?
Anyone who commits his or her life to following Jesus is ready to be baptized (Acts 8:12).
Is baptism for my kids?
Maybe. As parents, we help point our children to Jesus, but they are the ones to decide if they will commit their lives to Him (Romans 10:9).
In the Bible, baptism always follows a person’s decision to trust Jesus for his or her rescue from sin and commitment to follow Him (Acts 10:47-48). At Illuminate, we wait until children are old enough to express their own decision to follow Jesus and understand the meaning of baptism.
For families with young children who are not yet able to commit their life to Jesus, we offer a significant "mark the moment" time in the life of your family called Child Dedication where you can come before the church and publicly declare you are raising your family in the ways of Jesus.

Why do we immerse in water for baptism?
Jesus was baptized by being immersed in the water and rising out of it (Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10). When we are immersed in the waters of baptism, our old nature or worldly nature and our sin is dead and buried (Romans 6:3-5). This symbolizes you are no longer living for yourself, but for the Kingdom.
Being lowered into the water is a symbol of the burial of Jesus and you are burying your old self. Being raised from the water is a symbol of the resurrected Christ and you have a new life in God as an heir in His family and coheir with Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

Do I need to get baptized again?
It depends. Were you baptized by immersion AFTER accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior? If you were baptized as a baby or before you found Jesus, we encourage you to be baptized again as a reflection of your own desire and commitment to Jesus.
God never asks us to take a next step that isn’t good for us. He always gives us more than we deserve or can imagine, including the joy we receive from listening to Him and doing what He says.
Once you’ve taken the step, baptism does not wear off. You don’t need to be baptized again if you were baptized after accepting Jesus Christ, even if you screwed up and got into a mess of sin again.

Who can baptize me?
Anyone you want, as long as that person is a Christ-follower who has already been baptized (So that means Dads, Moms, your family, maybe a friend, or even a leader at Illuminate that you respect. But our pastor would always love to as well).
What should I wear?
We recommend dark clothing. We will provide a dark color Illuminate shirt for you, but it's a good idea to bring extra clothes to change into afterward.
The Bible says that all professing Christians should be baptized (Matthew 28:18-20). Whether you've been following Jesus for a long time and never got baptized or are a new Christian, we would be honored to baptize you!
